Rebuilding a category architecture

A sketch of a shop found by its brand name, with a catalogue that has outgrown the way the site is organised. Not a client. This is not a published client result.

These labels are the measures that would be checked. No figure is published, because no client result is on this page.

How client-reported, platform-measured and modelled figures are told apart — and what this page will not claim — is set out in the case study standards.

01

The situation

This page is not a client result. It describes a shop whose organic visits are mostly people who already know the name, while paid ads carry new customers.

Faceted filters can create more crawlable URLs than the shop has products. Crawl time then goes to pages nobody meant to publish.

02

What would be checked first

Which filter combinations are worth an indexable URL, which can be crawled, and which should be blocked.

Whether the category terms people use when they are ready to buy are pages with buying guidance, or only a product grid.

03

What the work would include

A written rule for filters, applied in stages, with a check between each stage.

Category pages rewritten around how people search, including what to do with out-of-stock and discontinued products so those URLs do not linger as empty pages.

04

What is not on this page

No revenue figure is published, brand or otherwise. No client is named. A real version of this page would separate brand search from non-brand search before any percentage was shown.

What the work is for

No number is published.

  • The aim is that new customers can be counted separately from people who already know the name
  • The aim is that crawl activity sits on pages that can take an order
  • The aim is a category page that explains the buy, not only a grid of products
